God's Greater Plan

Scripture – Genesis 3:21-24: The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. And the LORD God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” So the LORD God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) There are some interesting things here. First of all, there’s a snapshot of God’s hands-on love as He makes clothes for Adam and Eve. After their sin, He doesn’t just leave them on their own. There’s tenderness in that snapshot. How He loved them! There’s also an age-old question raised here: When God refers to “us,” to whom is He talking? Far greater minds than mine have tried to answer that and have come up empty. So I don’t put much energy into it anymore. Obviously, there is a spiritual realm where other created beings relate to God in a personal way. That’s just part of the mystery of faith I can live with. Finally, there’s the reference to “the tree of life.” What’s that about? Why did God specifically want to keep them away from it? It seems to me that, several generations later, Christ came precisely so we could eat from that tree and live forever.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I don’t always understand the ways of God. I will accept and embrace the mysteries of our faith, even as I live in the assurance of eternal life.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, today I have more questions than answers. Thank you for the grace and peace to live with those questions. How you work out your plan is your business. I do know, as part of that plan, you have saved me. If you choose, use me to lead others to embrace and enjoy that same assurance this day.

An Invitation – If you’re interested in a face to face discussion about what we’ve been discovering in the Mini-Journal, a small group will be meeting tomorrow morning, 9:45 – 10:30am, at the Southgate Fun and Fitness Center (on Northline near I-75). Remember Eden

Scripture – Genesis 3:17-20: To Adam he said, “Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat of it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” Adam named his wife Eve, because she would become the mother of all the living.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) Two things strike me here. For the first time names are mentioned. So now we have Adam and Eve. God doesn’t create generic people. He creates individuals. There is no one like me. The other thing I notice is that because of Adam’s disobedience, the ground is cursed. That, of course, has a great impact on Adam’s life. Now he’s going to have to work hard to get things to grow.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) That’s a hard lesson I keep forgetting. When I disobey God, my life gets harder. I’ll complain sometimes about different situations I face. At the same time, usually I’ve gotten myself into those situations. One of the benefits of trusting Christ to be the Director of my life is that He brings order to life. He sets priorities. He provides what I need. And I don’t have to worry about anything. I will practice living worry-free today. I’ll make this a “Garden of Eden” day.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, forgive me for not paying attention to you. You’re always there to take care of me. Always ready to provide for me. I just forget to trust you. I lean on myself. Remind me that even if I make a mess of things, you’ll help me clean it up. I don’t have to do that by myself. Thank you for that. Be my Lord this day.

An Invitation – If you’re interested in a face to face discussion about what we’ve been discovering in the Mini-Journal, a small group will be meeting this Sunday morning, 9:45 – 10:30am, at the Southgate Fun and Fitness Center (on Northline near I-75). Open Eyes

Scripture – Genesis 3:14-16: So the LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” To the woman he said, “I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) God understood the serpent was behind all this. The man and the woman were responsible for their choice. And they would have to live with the consequences of that choice. At the same time, the serpent was a troublemaker. He was intentional about that. God knows that. God also has authority over the evil one. And so the great choice is put before us.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) Satan continues to work his manipulative magic in our lives. He’s done a great job of controlling his image so people don’t take him seriously. Yet he continues to sneak up in the best of times and entice people away from God. The less I see of him, the more dangerous he becomes. I will keep my eyes open for the temptations that come. I expect him to be moving in my life today – trying to get me away from Christ. I will be ready for that.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, please surround me with your protection today. As the subtle temptations come, calling me to follow a different path, help me see them. In you I will resist. In you alone, I will be victorious. Thank you for your power and presence. Help me keep the eyes of my heart on your today, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

A Simple Question

Scripture – Genesis 3:9-13: But the LORD God called to the man, “Where are you?” He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) Even as the man and the woman were hiding from God, He called to them. God’s love for me never stops. He’s always reaching out to me – even when I try to hide. I cannot keep God from loving me. I don’t have the power to stop that. It’s a choice He has made. God called, and the man answered. That’s a good thing. Then God asked two simple questions. The second one needed only a “yes” or a “no” for an answer.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) In 1 John 1:9 we find this promise: “If we confess our sins, he who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” The culture in which we live encourages us to avoid responsibility for our actions. We’re taught to look for someone else to blame. Yet the simple fact is I am responsible for decisions I make and the consequences of my actions. I find forgiveness for my sins when I confess them honestly. I will be responsible today. I will be honest with God and with myself.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, thank you for loving me. Please keep reminding me there’s no way I can lose that. Teach me to be honest today. As you raise questions in my heart, give me the inner integrity to answer truthfully. Help me live fully in the light of your grace this day. Thanks again.

The Voice of the Serpent

Scripture – Genesis 3:6-8: When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the LORD God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the LORD God among the trees of the garden.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) Wow! There is far too much here to cover in this limited space. I guess the heart of this passage is that the man and woman did what God told them not to do. He had issued a simple command – as clear as could be. Everything else in the garden was at their disposal. And they chose the one thing they were told not to do. The result was they hid from God.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) It doesn’t take great interpretive skill to see the parallel with life today. The Lord has provided so much in my life. I have far more than I need. Yet there’s still within that voice telling me I need more – I deserve more. The good news is, when I do give in to that voice – when I cross the line into sin – I don’t have to hide from God. First of all, I can’t. God knew exactly where the man and woman were and what they had done. No matter how embarrassed and ashamed I might be, I can always turn to Him. Because of the cross of Christ I have forgiveness. Because of Christ I have the promise of a new beginning whenever I need it. I will live in the light that good news.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Thank you, Lord, for your forgiveness. Thank your for loving me in my sin. Thank you for the fresh start you always offer. Thank for being a God from whom I never have to hide.

What Does the Bible Say?

Scripture – Genesis 3:1-5: Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) Obviously the man had passed on to the woman what God had told him about the trees in the garden. What she tells the serpent is a little different than what God told the man. God identified the forbidden tree as “the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” (Saturday’s reading) She refers only to “the tree that is in the middle of the garden.” She also adds that they should not even touch it. Was the man unclear in passing on the instruction? Was the woman sort of changing what she was told? However it happened, God’s word has been altered.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) In passing on the faith to new people, the Bible is our primary resource. At times, I still catch myself saying, “Somewhere in the Bible it says…” Then I rattle off a paraphrase of a passage that may or may not be accurate. That’s why we have this mini-journal. One of the purposes is to read a portion of scripture each day, give some serious thought to it, and see what the Bible itself says. This week, as I speak with people, I will only make reference to Biblical passages I can quote by heart or that I can turn to and read.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, you have given us your written word. I’m sorry for not using it as effectively as I can. I’m sorry for taking the lazy way out so often. Help me discipline myself to read and pay attention to what I’m reading. Please keep teaching me. Help me pass on your word accurately.

Conscious Choices

Scripture – Genesis 2:15-19: The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.” The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the beasts of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) True freedom is found within limits. God has set things up so I am free to make choices. The man was free to eat from any tree in the garden except one. My guess is that tree was not different from any others in its essence as a tree. The difference was God used it to draw a line of obedience. That line gives me the freedom of choice. Will I obey Him or not?

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) As I go through each day, that choice pops up all the time. It took me a while to really learn Christianity is not a set of rules to follow. It is a living relationship with God through Jesus Christ. And in that relationship I choose to let Him be the director of my life. That means if He shows me something is bad for me, He’s not restricting my freedom. Rather He’s giving me a new choice. I will watch for those choices. I will thank Him for the freedom He gives. I will make conscious choices to obey Him or not. For He gives me that freedom.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, you speak more clearly sometimes than I’d like. The direction you give me is only for my good. I really do know that. Please forgive me when I disobey. Please help me recognize the forbidden fruit I see today. And help me choose to leave it alone. Remind me often that I am free to choose you.

An Invitation – If you’re interested in a face to face discussion about what we’ve been discovering in the Mini-Journal, a small group will be meeting tomorrow morning, 9:45 – 10:30am, at the Southgate Fun and Fitness Center (on Northline near I-75). Pleasing to the Eye

Scripture – Genesis 2:8-14: Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. And the LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin and onyx are also there.) The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) As this story of creation unfolds, we see more pieces falling into place. God had already planted a garden, where He then put the man. Then all kinds of trees grew up. While some were for food, others were just “pleasing to the eye.” Could it be that some of God’s creation is here simply for us to enjoy? Maybe I don’t have to find a “use” for everything.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) A lot of days I forget to simply stop, look around at what God has created, and enjoy it. There is a lot going on right now in this season of spring. There are many things “pleasing to the eye.” I will look around and enjoy them. I’ll take at least two mini-breaks a day just to look and listen and enjoy God’s creation.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, thank you for providing so many sights and sounds to enjoy. I’m sorry I ignore so much of that. Keep my eyes and ears open today. Remind me I don’t have to go far to be amazed and enriched by your handiwork. I don’t really have to go beyond the front yard. Sometimes, I don’t even need to leave the house. Thank you for your creation. You are an awesome God.

An Invitation – If you’re interested in a face to face discussion about what we’ve been discovering in the Mini-Journal, a small group will be meeting this Sunday morning, 9:45 – 10:30am, at the Southgate Fun and Fitness Center (on Northline near I-75). God's Intentional Act

Scripture – Genesis 2:4-7: This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens—and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no man to work the ground, but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground—the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) This is one of our foundational truths. God created human beings. We are not here by some random, accidental mixing of various elements. We are here by God’s plan and design. Like the first man, God breathed life into me when He was ready for me to be born. I became a living being by His intentional action and grace. I have my beginning in Him, and in Christ, my life will never end. I have no previous lives nor will I come back in some future reincarnation. My life today is a gift – a unique experience that has never been before nor will it ever be repeated.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) Every person is unique. The life I live today is fresh and new. I will live out of my uniqueness. I will be aware no one brings what I bring to the table of life. So I will continue to look for and follow the unique path Christ calls me to follow. I will also embrace the uniqueness of everyone else I meet.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, you have made me just as you want. Please help me be who you want. Continue to reveal your intentions for my life and give me what I need to live them out. I trust you to be my wholeness – my reason for living – my Lord.

God's Personal Plan

Scripture – John 21:20-25: Peter turned and saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them. (This was the one who had leaned back against Jesus at the supper and had said, “Lord, who is going to betray you?”) When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?” Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.” Because of this, the rumor spread among the brothers that this disciple would not die. But Jesus did not say that he would not die; he only said, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?” This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true. Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) It is so easy to keep my eye on other people and wonder, “What about them?” Most of the time, I know what the Lord wants me to do. And a lot of the time it seems like other people are doing something else. If I’m not careful, I get resentful. It’s like when I was younger and my parents wouldn’t let me do some of the things my friends were doing. I didn’t trust them enough to know they were looking out for me. Each one us has been created by God with a personal plan and purpose in mind. My best goal in life is to discover what that is for me and to let myself be the person God created me to be.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will let Christ continue His transforming work within me. My goal is to let Him flow through me so I don’t have to consciously act like a Christian. Rather, I will be a follower of Christ. I will be like Him.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, I have no hope of achieving that goal apart from you. Teach me to keep the door of my heart open to you. Show me how to let you live in and through me.

Knowing Who I Am

Scripture – John 21:15-19: When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.” Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you truly love me?” He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.” The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. I tell you the truth, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.” Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) I have heard many sermons and lessons on this passage. Obviously the first focus is on the three questions Jesus asks Peter. While they sound the same, it looks like each one goes to a deeper level. Finally Peter gets to a basic truth: “Lord, you know all things.” Jesus knows who I am. He knows I love Him. He knows how I struggle sometimes to show that. He knows when I take Him for granted. He knows when my actions seem to show something else. If I’m going to offer my life to Him, I need to know who I’m offering. Christ wants an honest confession of who I am. He will help me see who I am – as imperfect as I am. Then His call still comes – “Follow me!”

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will be as honest as I can. I do love Jesus Christ. I will live for Him today. I will trust Him today. I will love Him today.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Remind me to do that, Lord. Just remind me often today of your love for me – your never-ending love for me. Show me how to love you. Please continue teaching me what it means to follow you. For you, indeed, know all things, and you know that I love you.

Extraordinary Moments

Scripture – John 21:12-14: Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

Observation (Write down what you see in the scripture.) Here we have the risen Christ serving an ordinary meal. He’s fixed a simple breakfast for the disciples. Yet His very presence makes this an extraordinary event. Could He be demonstrating a simple truth? Christ is alive, and He’s part of my everyday life. He keeps appearing in surprising ways to the disciples. He still does that today. One of the spiritual giants of Bethel died a few days ago. His name is Al Covert. As we prepare for his funeral tomorrow – his home-going celebration – many of us are reflecting on the lessons he taught us. One of them is on the simplicity of life and faith – how Jesus is always here. I think every moment for Al was extraordinary because the Lord was always with him. He was never surprised by an unexpected appearance of Jesus because He was never gone. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Trust the Lord and love the people around you. Jesus is alive this very day.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will look for the extraordinary today. I will stay open to Jesus Christ, the risen Lord. I will let Him take over more of me.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord Jesus, your transforming power is always ready to impact me on the inside and spill over to the outside. Please help me stop resisting that. Come alive in me in a fresh way today. Take up residence in some of the deeper levels of who I am.

Christ's Continuing Call

Scripture – John 21:7-11: Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” Simon Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) The disciples seemed surprised to see Jesus again. Did they think He was done with them? They received what sounded like a final message in Jerusalem. Maybe they thought that was all. Now they were back to work as fishermen. Yet here Jesus is. He’s not done with them. He has work for them that will take them far away from their boats. In this scene, Jesus has already given them fishing advice that resulted in a huge haul of fish. Now He’s fixing breakfast for them. What does He have in store for them next?

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I tend to get settled into regular patterns in life and ministry. I sense how Christ wants me to serve and, without realizing it, I close myself off to new possibilities. I sometimes act like He’s had His last word with me. Today and this week, I will open myself to Him – to whatever He may have for me. I will let myself be surprised by what He calls me to do.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord Jesus, please forgive me for not listening for your call each day. I tune into you in specific situations, but for the bigger picture of my life, I’ve tended to overlook your continuing call. Help me be open to what you have for me. I am committed to following your lead for the rest of my life. Give me courage to do that.

All I Need

Scripture – John 20:30-31: Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) The gospel of John is just a summary of what Jesus did –a scrapbook full of selected snapshots. But, while there are many more stories that have not been recorded, these have been written. And in them we have enough to believe that Jesus is the Christ and that we have eternal life through Him. That’s one clear point Jesus has made throughout John’s gospel – I have life through my belief in Him. It doesn’t come to me because of any good things I may do. And it’s not withheld from me because of the bad things I do. That’s the great hope and promise He gives. I don’t have to move through life wondering if I’m good enough or afraid that I’m not going to measure up at the end. I believe in Jesus Christ. In Him I have life. And that’s all I need.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will live with thanksgiving and freedom today. No matter what happens, no matter what choices I make, I have eternal life secured because of what He has done for me. So I will live on the bright side of the cross.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, thank you very much for taking this burden off my shoulders. I could never be good enough to deserve what you’ve given. You and I both know that. Now I’m free to live for you – free to live a good life. I don’t do that to stay in your good grace. I do it because I am in your good grace. I am a child of the King. Help me live like one this day. Thanks again.

An Invitation – If you’re interested in a face to face discussion about what we’ve been discovering in the Mini-Journal, a small group will be meeting this Sunday morning, 9:45 – 10:30am, at the Southgate Fun and Fitness Center (on Northline near I-75). What a Day to Miss!

Scripture – John 20:24-29: Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it.” A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) We often joke about never knowing what to expect when we come to worship at Bethel on a Sunday morning. At the same time, there’s a serious truth to that. Thomas picked the wrong Sunday to skip church. It cost him an entire week of Easter joy. The other disciples tried to explain. But Thomas could not let himself believe Jesus was alive without seeing for himself. So it must have been a long, strange week for him. His friends were so excited, yet he could not connect with their experience. What a day to miss church! I’ll bet he never missed again.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) There are lots of church gatherings outside of Sunday morning worship. Many times I come to them without an openness to be surprised. I’ll just see them as routine meetings or activities. Today, I will consciously open myself to these gatherings. For example, I have a couple meetings planned today. I will look for Jesus to show up in them. I will be ready for His surprises. I will embrace whatever new thing He has planned.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord Jesus, I’m sorry for the times I fall back into routines. Whenever believers come together, you are there. Help me see you and welcome you today. Keep me open to your surprise appearances. Thanks for being part of our lives.

The Power of Peace

Scripture – John 20:19-24: On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) The beginning of the transformation is here. The disciples have gathered together. By now they’ve heard Mary’s story. Still, that night they’re in a locked room – afraid of the Jews. All at once, Jesus is with them. Suddenly He came with the message of peace and the gift of the Holy Spirit. What an experience that must have been. There have been times I’ve been afraid and Jesus has showed up with His peace. I’m coming to rely on that more and more these days.

Application (Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will trust Him today – to be my peace.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Help me do that, Lord. With all the things in life that would try to induce fear, please be my peace – and empower me to be peace to others. Thanks.

Mourning Into Dancing

Scripture – John 20:15-18: “Woman,” he said, “why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.” Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene went to the disciples with the news: “I have seen the Lord!” And she told them that he had said these things to her.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) What was there in the way He spoke her name? An inflection, a tone, an intensity, a gentleness, a familiarity……….what? Whatever it was, in that one spoken word, Mary’s life changed. All at once, the old ways of thinking were transformed. The limits of the past no longer held her captive. There was more still to be sorted out. There were implications that would later be understood. But for this moment, her mourning was turned into dancing. Her head and heart must have been spinning was she carried now this wonderful message, “I have seen the Lord!”

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will look for Jesus today. He is in the midst of life. He reveals Himself more than I ever realize. In Him I will live with hope no matter what this day brings.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Thank you, Lord, for the glorious surprise of Easter morning. Thank you for the sustaining hope of life eternal. Remind me often, today is part of eternity. There is no hopeless situation. In you I can always look ahead.

Open to Someone New

Scripture – John 20:10-14: Then the disciples went back to their homes, but Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot. They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?” “They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) The men went away. Men often will try to figure out what to do next. We’re not very good at just standing around feeling helpless. Mary, however, stayed. In her grief and confusion she stayed. The vision of two angels didn’t seem to surprise her. Perhaps she was still so focused on the loss of Jesus’ body that she didn’t realize something new and wonderful was happening. She turned around and saw Jesus, but she didn’t recognize Him. Sometimes when I’m out at a restaurant, I’ll see someone who looks familiar, but I can’t place them. It’s usually someone I’m used to seeing only in one setting – like a clerk in a store, for example. Seeing them in an unexpected place, I don’t recognize them. Mary had a few days to adjust to Jesus’ death. She expected to find a lifeless body. No wonder she failed to recognize Him standing alive.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I often categorize people. That is, I see them in one way and lock myself into that image of who they are. In doing that, I shut them out of all kinds of possibilities. “He wouldn’t want to do that.” Or, “She can’t do this.” I will fight that this week. I will open myself to see people for who they are becoming. I’ll welcome them anew each time we meet.

Prayer (Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, thank you for seeing me – not only who I am, but who I am becoming. Remind me you are working in the lives of others, as well. Help me see that and encourage that in the people I meet.

Anything's Possible

Scripture – John 20:3-9: So Peter and the other disciple started for the tomb. Both were running, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent over and looked in at the strips of linen lying there but did not go in. Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus’ head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. (They still did not understand from Scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.)

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) Most scholars agree this “other disciple” was John. At this point in the story, what was it he believed after entering the tomb? It would seem he believed what Mary had said – someone had removed the body of Jesus. The idea of Jesus rising from the dead was not yet a possibility to them. They were still caught within the limits of logic and common sense. That’s still a hard trap to escape today. Sometimes my own logical mind blocks my faith. If I’m not careful, I put my limits on God’s power. Peter, John, Mary and the rest were about to have their perspective on life turned upside down. Will I let that happen to me….again…..today?

Application – (Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I love to think things through and try to figure out how things work. Sometimes I slip back into that with God. I’ll be praying about a concern and, all the while, I’m going through possible ways God might go about addressing that concern. I will think a little less today and trust Christ a little more to do the miraculous, transforming work He does so well – even without my advice.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Thank you, Lord, for what you do. I’m sorry for the limits I put on you and myself. Teach me again that you can do anything.

Quick Conclusions

Scripture – John 20:1-2: Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the entrance. So she came running to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved, and said, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have put him!”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) What terrible thoughts must have run through Mary’s mind? The stone which would have been covering the entrance to Jesus’ tomb had been removed. We don’t know if she went up and looked inside or not. We only know she jumped to a most logical conclusion – someone had removed His body. One thing I keep learning and re-learning in my walk with Christ is to be careful about reaching conclusions too quickly. God still does amazing things. Many times I’ve believed I had someone “figured out.” Then the Lord brought something brand new out of them and showed once again that no person is beyond His ability to transform. If Mary stopped to think, what other possibilities could there be to explain what she found?

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) As much as I want to jump ahead in this story, I will continue to go slowly. I’ll wait to see what tomorrow’s reading reveals. I will avoid jumping to quick conclusions today as I encounter people. I will trust the transforming power of Christ – in me and in them.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Keep me open today, Lord. I’m learning that’s a key aspect of being Christ-like – to welcome people into my life as they are. To listen to them with love and understanding, rather than with judgment. Help me do that today. And when words are appropriate, teach me what to say and how to speak.

A Secret Sadness

Scripture – John 19:38-42: Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jews. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs. At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) Here are two men who secretly followed Jesus. They were both respected leaders in the Jewish community. Joseph had enough standing to approach Pilate. The other disciples would not have been able to do that. Along with Nicodemus, he took charge of the burial of Jesus. In my mind I picture them handling Jesus’ body with great care and dignity. There’s a tenderness in their actions I can’t quite describe – a sadness in their hearts. Did they regret their silence while Jesus was alive? Did they think it was too late to do anything about it? How would they be different after this? I don’t have any of those answers. I just see two men who leaned into their fear after this tragic end to Jesus’ life and did the right thing. Even if it was too late, this was one last gift they could give Him.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will carry this scene with me today. As I remember these men, I will look at the people around me differently. I will respect them and treat them as I would like to be treated.

Prayer (Write out a brief prayer.) Today I offer myself anew to you, Lord. Give me an inner strength to follow you and live for you instead of myself. Thank you for the gift you have given.

Jesus Died

Scripture – John 19:31-37: Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jews did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,” and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) A crucial aspect of the cross is that Jesus died. Over the years many stories have come and gone, suggesting He didn’t really die. Most recently we have this new film coming out that supposedly reveals the tomb where Jesus’ bones were kept. Again, that story apparently relies on the idea He did not die on the cross, but somehow only appeared to be dead and then later revived. There are a lot of things in the Christian faith that lie outside the realm of standard, historical verification. However, one thing is very clear: Jesus died on that cross. His body stopped functioning that day. That is a matter of historical record.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will remember there are a lot of false ideas floating around today about Jesus and the Christian faith. Most of them are driven by movies about Jesus and/or the church. I will speak more clearly and boldly when I encounter such ideas.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Thank you, Lord Jesus, for dying for us all. Thank you for not turning away from the cross. Thank you for the Truth you are in my life and for the world.

All Done!

Scripture – John 19:28-30: Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) What powerful words! On the cross Jesus’ purpose was fulfilled. His sinless life was the offering that covered my sin. How that worked is beyond my comprehension. That it worked is God’s gift of grace. It’s hard to write any more. For everything I need is wrapped up in His final words, “It is finished.” I don’t need to add anything else. He has done it all.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will live today with hope because Jesus gave His life for me. I don’t have to add anything. Indeed, I cannot add anything. He has done all that needs doing for eternal life. I will thank Him forever because of that.

Prayer (Write out a brief prayer.) “Thank you, Lord, for saving my soul. Thank you, Lord, for making me whole. Thank you, Lord, for giving to me Thy great salvation, so rich and free.”

Compassionate Service

Scripture – John 19:23-24: When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. “Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.” This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled which said, “They divided my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing.” So this is what the soldiers did.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) How many crucifixions had these soldiers been through? How did they deal with that kind of duty? Obviously they had to disconnect themselves from the people on the crosses. In this passage they’re just doing what was normal for them. The clothes and belongings of the victim were left to them to divide up any way they wanted. There’s an experience I’ve heard described as “compassion fatigue.” It simply means there are limits to my compassion. In this day and age there is so much suffering going on in the world – from my neighbors to the other side of the globe. I cannot muster compassion for all the people and their needs. The danger is, I’ll pull back and not actively care about anyone. That’s why it’s helpful to focus on one or just a few areas of service. That keeps me connected through compassionate work.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) Of all the needs I see in the news and in this community, which ones will I focus on? For I realize I’m not focused anywhere in terms of compassionate service. I will make this a matter of prayer and commitment. I will seek Christ’s direction for me. I will become involved in some specific area of service beyond the local church.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Please begin speaking to me, Lord. Open my eyes and my heart. Show me where and how to serve you in this world in a practical way. Please lead me to that this week.

New Opportunities

Scripture – John 19:17-22: Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha). Here they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle. Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS. Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek. The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, “Do not write ‘The King of the Jews,’ but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews.” Pilate answered, “What I have written, I have written.”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) I’ve never paid much attention to Pilate. I’ve always seen him as one of background people in the story. Yet he was pulled right into the middle of God’s great act of deliverance for humankind. And it sure looks to me like he was affected by it more than he realized. In spite of the distance he tried to maintain, he somehow knew Jesus was more than a good man wrongfully condemned. This is where imagination kicks in. What happened to Pilate? Especially after a few more days passed, what did he think? How did this affect his life?

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) We can never tell what an encounter with someone might mean – to them or us. As a witness for Christ, what do I offer people? I will be aware of what I say to people I meet and how I come across to them. I will be mindful of what I learn from them. I will also do a little research on Pilate and see what history has to say about him.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, remind me there are no “chance” encounters with people. Whether in the midst of a church meeting or in a grocery store check-out line, help me be your follower – your witness. Keep me open, as well, to learn from the people you bring into my life.

Spiritual Integrity

Scripture – John 19:12-16: From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jews kept shouting, “If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.” When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge’s seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha). It was the day of Preparation of Passover Week, about the sixth hour. “Here is your king,” Pilate said to the Jews. But they shouted, “Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!” “Shall I crucify your king?” Pilate asked. “We have no king but Caesar,” the chief priests answered. Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) “Pilate tried to set Jesus free.” He never grasped the fact that Jesus is the One who sets us free. Pilate knew what he wanted to do. He knew what he ought to do. But….he stopped short of doing it. I do that more often than I’d like to think. Sometimes I remain quiet when I should speak up. Other times I talk when I should shut up. There are many times when I choose to avoid getting involved because it would inconvenience me. A lot of times I’m afraid of what people might think. There are many things that keep me from doing what I want to do and what ought to do.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) It’s easy to sit back and take shots at Pilate. Yet I share more similarities with him than I realize. I will pay attention to my behavior and my choices today. I’ll note what really controls me – what leads me to act in specific ways.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord Jesus, I’m sorry for the times I let fear control me. Help me value your impression of me over that of other people. Give me courage to live with spiritual integrity today.

An Invitation – If you’re interested in a face to face discussion about what we’ve been discovering in the Mini-Journal, a small group will be meeting tomorrow morning, 9:45 – 10:30am, at the Southgate Fun and Fitness Center (on Northline near I-75). Who's In Charge?

Scripture – John 19:6-11: As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify!” But Pilate answered, “You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him.” The Jews insisted, “We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God.” When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid, and he went back inside the palace. “Where do you come from?” he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer. “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?” Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) What was in the hearts of those Jewish leaders? What engendered such animosity toward Jesus? It’s like the power of Satan had captured them and led to their call for crucifixion. In the midst of this whole scene, who’s in charge? Certainly not Pilate. It’s like Satan has been given free reign to do whatever he wants – to use people for his own ends. In the center of all this chaos, it’s important to see Jesus. For He’s the One giving Satan permission. He’s the One still in control. He’s the One embracing the cross for us all. He’s the only One who knows what’s going on.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will remember what Christ has done for me today. I will trust Him to be in control. I will not allow chaotic situations to overwhelm me with fear. With Christ at the center, there is always peace.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, you are always in control. I don’t always understand your ways. But I trust you to work things out as you want. So help me live and move, or at least stand, in your strength and peace this day.

An Invitation – If you’re interested in a face to face discussion about what we’ve been discovering in the Mini-Journal, a small group will be meeting this Sunday morning, 9:45 – 10:30am, at the Southgate Fun and Fitness Center (on Northline near I-75). Risking Intimacy

Scripture – John 19:1-5: Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” And they struck him in the face. Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews, “Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.” When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, “Here is the man!”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) How could Pilate allow such treatment of an innocent man? As much as I dislike what’s described in these verses, I read them over and over – remembering Jesus chose to follow this path. I live with the assurance of God’s grace and the hope of eternal life today because of that. It seems to me, in his personal conversation with Jesus, Pilate was touched at a very deep and intimate level. Something in Christ reached out and connected with him. Perhaps it caused him to glimpse something inside he had been avoiding or something he’d never seen before. Of course, I don’t know any of that. It just looks to me like Pilate moved quickly from a personal, face to face moment with Christ to a great emotional distance.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I know that experience. Sometimes God will show me something inside that I don’t really want to see. So I change the subject or look in a different direction. Sometimes intimacy with Christ is a scary moment. I feel vulnerable and afraid. The next time a moment like that comes, I will stay with it. I will stay with Him. For even in the fear and/or pain, great transformation happens. Good Friday leads to Easter.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Give me courage, Lord, to risk true intimacy with you. Help me open myself to you at ever-deepening levels. For you have nothing but the best in mind for me. I trust you. Lord, help me trust you more.
