Exceptionally Simple Words
Scripture – Matthew 6:9-13: 9“This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 11Give us today our daily bread. 12Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’
Observation – (Write down what you see in the scripture.) These are exceptionally simple words. I’ve read a book or two about them. I’ve preached on them. I’ve been through classes where we’ve studied these words over a few weeks. Yet they present an exceptionally simple example of how to pray. They’re more than words to be repeated. They reveal attitudes to be lived. In prayer – any prayer – I recognize God is God, and I am not. I remember He is in control of the ultimate future of creation. I trust Him to provide my daily needs, to grant me His forgiveness and to teach me how to be a forgiving person with others. In my daily struggle with the evil one, He will protect me and lead me safely forward. If I spend too much time studying these words, I forget to live them.
Application – (Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I’ll take God at His word today. I won’t over think things. I’ll just trust Him and let Him lead me on.
Prayer – (Write out a brief prayer.) Lord Jesus, your words are very clear and simple. I’m sorry for confusing myself by thinking too much. Teach me today to take these words to heart – to trust you as the ultimate director and protector for my life. Provide what I need and lead me wherever you will.
