Exceptionally Simple Words

Scripture – Matthew 6:9-13: ⁹“This, then, is how you should pray: “‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, ¹⁰your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. ¹¹Give us today our daily bread. ¹²Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. ¹³And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’

Observation – (Write down what you see in the scripture.) These are exceptionally simple words. I’ve read a book or two about them. I’ve preached on them. I’ve been through classes where we’ve studied these words over a few weeks. Yet they present an exceptionally simple example of how to pray. They’re more than words to be repeated. They reveal attitudes to be lived. In prayer – any prayer – I recognize God is God, and I am not. I remember He is in control of the ultimate future of creation. I trust Him to provide my daily needs, to grant me His forgiveness and to teach me how to be a forgiving person with others. In my daily struggle with the evil one, He will protect me and lead me safely forward. If I spend too much time studying these words, I forget to live them.

Application – (Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I’ll take God at His word today. I won’t over think things. I’ll just trust Him and let Him lead me on.

Prayer – (Write out a brief prayer.) Lord Jesus, your words are very clear and simple. I’m sorry for confusing myself by thinking too much. Teach me today to take these words to heart – to trust you as the ultimate director and protector for my life. Provide what I need and lead me wherever you will.
