Recognizing the Real

Scripture – 1 John 2:26-29: ²⁶I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. ²⁷As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit—just as it has taught you, remain in him. ²⁸And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming. ²⁹If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.

Observation – (Write down what you see in the scripture.) There are a lot of ideas about religion and spiritual life floating around these days. I’ve learned to listen carefully to what’s said by any particular leader. I weigh it against my growing understanding of Biblical truth. There are a lot of counterfeit teachings out there. They look like Christian truth, but underneath they are not.

Application – (Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will be vigilant today. I will help people see the counterfeit teachings around us. Jesus Christ is at the heart of Christian faith – for the church and for me personally. He’s done all that needs to be done for my salvation. The counterfeit teachings generally try to add more to that.

Prayer – (Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, thank you for your truth in my life. Keep my eyes and ears open. Keep me on course today. Guide your church. Help us all continue in you and no one else.
