Simple Reminders
Scripture – Genesis 9:12-17: And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.” So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant I have established between me and all life on the earth.”
Observation – (Write down what you see in the scripture.) It’s interesting to me that God set the rainbow in the clouds to remind Himself of the covenant He made. Why would He need to do that? Surely, God doesn’t have a memory problem. However, I do. Maybe this is God’s way of reminding me that I need help remembering some things.
Application – (Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) The older I get, the more I need to write down things I need to do. There are some things too important to forget. So I have extra reminders for them. God’s reminder reminds me of His faithfulness. There’s still something oddly compelling about a rainbow. We drop what we’re doing and go outside to look at it. I will remember to appreciate life today. As I breathe in the spring air outside, I will praise God for who He is.
Prayer – (Write out a brief prayer.) Thank you, Lord, for remembering your promises. Help me remember, as well. Show me ways to set up signs for myself so I won’t forget you.
