Jesus Died

Scripture – John 19:31-37: Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jews did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. The man who saw it has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,” and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) A crucial aspect of the cross is that Jesus died. Over the years many stories have come and gone, suggesting He didn’t really die. Most recently we have this new film coming out that supposedly reveals the tomb where Jesus’ bones were kept. Again, that story apparently relies on the idea He did not die on the cross, but somehow only appeared to be dead and then later revived. There are a lot of things in the Christian faith that lie outside the realm of standard, historical verification. However, one thing is very clear: Jesus died on that cross. His body stopped functioning that day. That is a matter of historical record.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will remember there are a lot of false ideas floating around today about Jesus and the Christian faith. Most of them are driven by movies about Jesus and/or the church. I will speak more clearly and boldly when I encounter such ideas.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Thank you, Lord Jesus, for dying for us all. Thank you for not turning away from the cross. Thank you for the Truth you are in my life and for the world.
