Extraordinary Moments
Scripture – John 21:12-14: Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.
Observation – (Write down what you see in the scripture.) Here we have the risen Christ serving an ordinary meal. He’s fixed a simple breakfast for the disciples. Yet His very presence makes this an extraordinary event. Could He be demonstrating a simple truth? Christ is alive, and He’s part of my everyday life. He keeps appearing in surprising ways to the disciples. He still does that today. One of the spiritual giants of Bethel died a few days ago. His name is Al Covert. As we prepare for his funeral tomorrow – his home-going celebration – many of us are reflecting on the lessons he taught us. One of them is on the simplicity of life and faith – how Jesus is always here. I think every moment for Al was extraordinary because the Lord was always with him. He was never surprised by an unexpected appearance of Jesus because He was never gone. It doesn’t have to be complicated. Trust the Lord and love the people around you. Jesus is alive this very day.
Application – (Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will look for the extraordinary today. I will stay open to Jesus Christ, the risen Lord. I will let Him take over more of me.
Prayer – (Write out a brief prayer.) Lord Jesus, your transforming power is always ready to impact me on the inside and spill over to the outside. Please help me stop resisting that. Come alive in me in a fresh way today. Take up residence in some of the deeper levels of who I am.
