Christ's Continuing Call

Scripture – John 21:7-11: Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” Simon Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) The disciples seemed surprised to see Jesus again. Did they think He was done with them? They received what sounded like a final message in Jerusalem. Maybe they thought that was all. Now they were back to work as fishermen. Yet here Jesus is. He’s not done with them. He has work for them that will take them far away from their boats. In this scene, Jesus has already given them fishing advice that resulted in a huge haul of fish. Now He’s fixing breakfast for them. What does He have in store for them next?

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I tend to get settled into regular patterns in life and ministry. I sense how Christ wants me to serve and, without realizing it, I close myself off to new possibilities. I sometimes act like He’s had His last word with me. Today and this week, I will open myself to Him – to whatever He may have for me. I will let myself be surprised by what He calls me to do.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord Jesus, please forgive me for not listening for your call each day. I tune into you in specific situations, but for the bigger picture of my life, I’ve tended to overlook your continuing call. Help me be open to what you have for me. I am committed to following your lead for the rest of my life. Give me courage to do that.
