A Unique Opportunity
Scripture – John 18:33-36: Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” “Is that your own idea,” Jesus asked, “or did others talk to you about me?” “Am I a Jew?” Pilate replied. “It was your people and your chief priests who handed you over to me. What is it you have done?” Jesus said, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place.”
Observation – (Write down what you see in the scripture.) Pilate had an absolutely unique opportunity. He was a non-believer – totally disconnected from the Jewish religion. Yet he had a one on one conversation with Jesus, the Christ – the Son of God. His real question seems to be, “Who are you?” He did not understand this man nor could he comprehend why He had put Himself in such a position. For clearly Jesus was demonstrating a peace and calmness that should not have been there. He wasn’t afraid of Pilate. He was readily embracing this path toward the cross. Pilate had a unique opportunity. I wonder what he made of it.
Application – (Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) One of my goals is to help people engage in such a direct, personal conversation with Christ. To help them ask their questions and discover the answers Jesus has for them. I’m not sure how to do that. But I will keep working at it. For everyone’s relationship with Christ is unique. I’ll be careful not to push mine on them.
Prayer – (Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, show me what to do today. Please give me an opportunity to lead someone closer to you – perhaps even to meet you and accept you as Lord and Savior into their life. Thank you for the unique relationship we have. Continue to grow in me that I might be more like you.
