Simple Reminders
Scripture – John 14:22-26: Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?” Jesus replied, “If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. “All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
Observation – (Write down what you see in the scripture.) Judas asks a question that’s limited by his world view. Jesus responds from the eternal time frame of God. He could not be available to all people if He remained in His physical body. But through the Holy Spirit, His divine presence and power can touch any person at any time. And so the Holy Spirit continues to teach me new things about Christ – His nature and His call. At the same time, the Spirit also reminds me of things I already know. He often brings me back to simple truth and basic belief.
Application – (Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) Sometimes I get myself confused about ministry and theology. In my thinking I’ll start drawing circles within circles and lines upon lines. At those times, when I ask for help, the Spirit comes and wipes the whole board clean, and brings me back to something as simple as “Love one another,” or “You will be my witnesses.” I will stay tuned in today to what He has for me. I will not over-think my faith.
Prayer – (Write out a brief prayer.) Thank you, Lord, for saving me and loving me. Thank you for the gift of eternal life. You’ve made it so easy – I only need to believe in you. Forgive me for trying to make it more complicated – especially for other people.
An Invitation – If you’re interested in a face to face discussion about what we’ve been discovering in the Mini-Journal, a small group will be meeting this Sunday morning, 9:45 – 10:30am, at the Southgate Fun and Fitness Center (on Northline near I-75). Look for them around one of the tables in the Café area.
