A Simple Reminder
Scripture – John 16:29-33: Then Jesus’ disciples said, “Now you are speaking clearly and without figures of speech. Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God.” “You believe at last!” Jesus answered. “But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Observation – (Write down what you see in the scripture.) Jesus lifts up two clear points. “In this world you will have trouble.” There’s no way around that. There are troubles that come because our faith puts us at odds with our culture. And there are troubles that we encounter as part of life – accidents, health concerns, relationships, problems at work, etc. Along with this truth, we have the assurance that Jesus has “overcome the world.” There is nothing in life that is beyond His control. He is never overwhelmed by too much stuff happening at once. So when I feel my life spinning out of control, I can lean on Him who is always in control. In Him I find a peace the world can never deliver.
Application – (Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will live in His peace today. When I feel myself starting to lose it, I will remember Jesus Christ and I will trust Him to handle what I cannot.
Prayer – (Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, that sounds so simple. Help me keep it that way. Thank you for your peace. May I live free today in the assurance that you are in charge.
