Looking for the Light

Scripture – John 11:49-53: Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, “You know nothing at all! You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.” He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one. So from that day on they plotted to take his life.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) Caiaphas unwittingly described the reason Jesus came. One person died so all people do not have to perish. God uses people all the time, whether they know it or not. In the Old Testament, God often used foreign powers to punish and/or bless Israel. Here Caiaphas thinks he’s acting against Jesus, when he’s really taking a hand in God’s great plan of salvation. God is constantly working for good in this world – even in the darkest of days. It’s my job to keep my eyes open to see that. Sometimes things look so bleak, I wonder where God is, when all the time He’s right there. I can focus on the darkness or look for the light. And sometimes I even am that light.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will be aware of God’s presence and possibilities today. Whatever happens, I know He will be there.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Thank you for the constancy of your presence in my life and in this world, Lord. Remind me often of that. Please keep my eyes open and my light shining.

An Invitation – If you’re interested in a face to face discussion about what we’ve been discovering in the Mini-Journal, join us at Bethel Baptist (Trenton & Venness in Southgate) this Sunday morning, 9:45 – 10:30am.
