A Good Question

Scripture – John 13:12-17: When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) Jesus’ question pretty well sums up my life-long spiritual quest: “Do you understand what I have done for you?” My answer continues to be “Yes” and “No.” This business of spiritual growth and formation is an adventure in which I keep discovering new levels of understanding. There’s an old chorus that goes, “He’s done so much for me, I cannot tell it all.” I understand so much more of what Christ has done for me than I did a year ago. At the same time, He continues to reveal new meaning to me. My life is so rich and full because of Him. He answers all my questions. Or more accurately, I believe He has the answer to all my questions. Perhaps one day I will fully understand. Then again, perhaps regular growth and renewal is part of eternal life. Either way, I can’t lose. In Him, I’ve already won because of what He’s done.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will continue to follow His example. I will keep open to His transforming power. Today I expect to understand a bit more of what Christ has done for me.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Thank you, Lord, for what you have done and are doing for me. Help me translate your work in me into service to others. Keep me moving outside myself, even as you move within. Teach me to follow the example of your heart, as well as that of your hands.

What a wonderful prayer. Much like my inner prayer today, but so much more beautifully expressed.
I am copying it so I can read and mean it daily.

Thanks again Roger,

Love, Barb
