Cashing the Check

Scripture – John 14:8-14:Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) This looks like the ultimate blank check. Yet it’s one I resist cashing. Why is that? Part of it is the smallness of my faith. I somehow convince myself Jesus didn’t really mean what He said here. There are many things I’ve asked for that, as far as I can see, He hasn’t done. Is that my faith falling short or His plan? There’s also a part of me that’s afraid He really does mean what He says. That power at my disposal is frightening. This all raise more questions than answers today. Perhaps the most powerful of them is, what keeps me from cashing this check?

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I’m not sure what I’ll do with this today. Perhaps more than a blank check, it’s like Jesus offers a limitless line of credit from which I can draw. While I’m still afraid to take out too much, I will push the limits a bit today and see what happens.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, you give me more than I want sometimes. Forgive me for not using what you have offered. Teach me how to trust your word in this. Empower me to serve you today. Thank you for your faith in me.
