Cashing the Check

Scripture – John 14:8-14:Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the miracles themselves. I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) This looks like the ultimate blank check. Yet it’s one I resist cashing. Why is that? Part of it is the smallness of my faith. I somehow convince myself Jesus didn’t really mean what He said here. There are many things I’ve asked for that, as far as I can see, He hasn’t done. Is that my faith falling short or His plan? There’s also a part of me that’s afraid He really does mean what He says. That power at my disposal is frightening. This all raise more questions than answers today. Perhaps the most powerful of them is, what keeps me from cashing this check?

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I’m not sure what I’ll do with this today. Perhaps more than a blank check, it’s like Jesus offers a limitless line of credit from which I can draw. While I’m still afraid to take out too much, I will push the limits a bit today and see what happens.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, you give me more than I want sometimes. Forgive me for not using what you have offered. Teach me how to trust your word in this. Empower me to serve you today. Thank you for your faith in me.

Peace for the Asking

Scripture – John 14:1-7: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really knew me, you would know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) Wow! Sometimes a short passage is filled with so many paths to explore; it’s hard to pick just one. I guess for today, the opening line catches my attention – “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” There are a lot of things going on for me right now – several different responsibilities that are all coming together at once this week. And I’m not sure how I’ll have time to get them done. I’m tempted to let my heart be troubled – to feel pressured and overwhelmed, which usually leads me to freeze up and do nothing. However, Christ has always provided what I need. Many times, in fact, God has literally created more time for me. I’m confident that what needs to be done will be done.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) Much of the time crunch I’m feeling comes from my choices. I’ve taken on things other people could easily have done. I will begin today letting go of some of those things. I will trust in God. I will remember the world will not end if I fail to get something finished.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Please give me your peace today, Lord. Help me move along, doing what you have for me to do. Help me with other stuff as well. I trust you to organize this day and give me whatever time I truly need.

Laying Down My Life

Scripture – John 13:36-38: Simon Peter asked him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus replied, “Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.” Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) Here’s a question I can treat as an intellectual exercise or as an opportunity for spiritual transformation. “Will you really lay down your life for me?” I constantly thank God I live in a society where my faith does not put me physically at risk. So I have the luxury of wondering how faithful I would be if my life were on the line, while knowing it’s unlikely I’ll ever face that. Of course, that’s a question I can’t answer. By the grace of God I don’t face such a fear. What I do face are opportunities every day to lay down my personal agenda – to let Christ lead me into some areas of service I really would rather avoid. Following Christ means I don’t live for myself. My focus in life doesn’t begin and end with my comfort and pleasure. Jesus provides plenty of that for me along the way. Laying down my life for Him in this day and setting means being ready to respond as He calls.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will let His plans take precedence over mine. In fact, as best I can, as I make my own plans, I will let Him be the coordinator. That way, what I do for myself will be part of His guidance for my life.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Thank you, Lord, for the freedom with which I live in this country. Forgive me for holding myself back from you – for giving you just a part of who I am. Help me trust you today with all my heart and life.

Choosing to Love

Scripture – John 13:31-35: When he was gone, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once. “My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: Where I am going, you cannot come. “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) What was it like for Jesus as He watched Judas leave? As John mentioned yesterday, the disciples assumed Jesus had sent him off on an errand. But Jesus knew Judas was bringing Him a step closer to the cross. Once again He reaffirmed His commitment – “Now is the Son of Man glorified.” This is why He came – to die for us all. In all that He did, He never lost sight of that. He never wavered. He never turned aside. I’ll probably never fully understand the meaning of the cross – at least, not in this lifetime. Then again, because of His cross, I have eternity to figure it out.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) “As I have loved you…” That’s the measure of love I’m to give others. Who would I die for? When it comes down to it, it seems I start with a pretty short list. At the same time, as I imagine different scenarios, the list becomes irrelevant. Love is acted out in the moment. I will keep the cross in my mind today. I will remember the love of Christ. I will love as I have been loved.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Even as I write this, Lord, you know my heart. You know my imperfection. You know me. You love me as I am. Increase my ability to demonstrate that love for others. Thank you for accepting the cross. Thanks for a grace-filled life. Please help me let you live through me today.

Avoiding the Traps

Scripture – John 13:26-30: Jesus answered, “It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish.” Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon. As soon as Judas took the bread, Satan entered into him. “What you are about to do, do quickly,” Jesus told him, but no one at the meal understood why Jesus said this to him. Since Judas had charge of the money, some thought Jesus was telling him to buy what was needed for the Feast, or to give something to the poor. As soon as Judas had taken the bread, he went out. And it was night.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) Did Judas have a choice? Could he have refused the bread? As soon as he took it, “Satan entered into him.” As soon as he took it, “he went out.” There’s a lot about Judas I don’t understand. In many ways, he had no choice. He was the one God used to carry out His plan. Much debate has been carried out by greater minds than mine on this subject. What I do understand is I have choices. There are different pieces of “bread” held out for me to take that are traps set by Satan. If I take one, I give him an opening to come into me. If I take it, my first inclination is to go out – to get away from Jesus. That always leads me toward the darkness.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) Usually, I know right from wrong. I know whether I should take the “bread” that’s offered or not. Over the years, Satan’s traps have become more subtle. If I’m not observant – if I rely only on my own insight – I step right into them. I will keep the eyes of my heart on Christ today. I will trust Him to deliver me from evil. And whatever happens, I will not run away from Him.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, you are my hope. You are my protector. Save me from the traps around me. Guide me safely through them today. You know my weaknesses. Please meet me at those points with your strength. Thank you.

Jesus Knows Me

Scripture – John 13:18-25: “I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture: ‘He who shares my bread has lifted up his heel against me.’ “I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am He. I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.” After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray me.” His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them he meant. One of them, the disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him. Simon Peter motioned to this disciple and said, “Ask him which one he means.” Leaning back against Jesus, he asked him, “Lord, who is it?”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) “I know those I have chosen.” When Jesus called me to follow Him, He knew what He was doing. He knows all about me. There is nothing hidden. He has always seen more in me than I see in myself. Part of what He does for me is lift me above my own limitations. He knows there’s a bit of Judas in me, just as there’s a bit of Peter, Thomas, Philip, etc. The good news is His love trumps all of that. He knows what I can and cannot do. He knows what I will and will not do. At the same time, He loves me, and He continues to see the moreness in me this day.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will let that moreness come out. I will trust Christ’s faith in me. I will let Him use me as He wants. I will accept His forgiveness along with His call.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, you know very well there are days when I’m the one who is going to betray you. And there are days when I will stand with you faithfully. Help me remember your love for me is not based on how good or bad I might be. Your love is unconditional. Thank you for trusting me. Lift me today to a new height. Use me as you want.

A Good Question

Scripture – John 13:12-17: When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) Jesus’ question pretty well sums up my life-long spiritual quest: “Do you understand what I have done for you?” My answer continues to be “Yes” and “No.” This business of spiritual growth and formation is an adventure in which I keep discovering new levels of understanding. There’s an old chorus that goes, “He’s done so much for me, I cannot tell it all.” I understand so much more of what Christ has done for me than I did a year ago. At the same time, He continues to reveal new meaning to me. My life is so rich and full because of Him. He answers all my questions. Or more accurately, I believe He has the answer to all my questions. Perhaps one day I will fully understand. Then again, perhaps regular growth and renewal is part of eternal life. Either way, I can’t lose. In Him, I’ve already won because of what He’s done.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will continue to follow His example. I will keep open to His transforming power. Today I expect to understand a bit more of what Christ has done for me.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Thank you, Lord, for what you have done and are doing for me. Help me translate your work in me into service to others. Keep me moving outside myself, even as you move within. Teach me to follow the example of your heart, as well as that of your hands.

Serving Everyone

Scripture – John 13:6-11: He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!” Jesus answered, “A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) Washing feet, as Jesus was doing, was a servant’s job. It was an act of welcome offered by someone to their guests. It would certainly be a freshening gift to receive in those days of dusty roads and open sandals. My guess is it would be offered by someone with the means to employ a servant to actually do the foot washing. I also suspect these disciples – at least most of them – may never have experienced it themselves before this day. Yet here’s Jesus doing it, promising that “later you will understand.” A lesson is being taught. And part of that lesson is that He even washed the feet of the one He knew “was going to betray him.”

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) It’s easy to pick and choose who I will serve. It’s usually an unconscious choice I make based on my history with the person. Jesus knew everything about each of these disciples, and he treated them the same. How can I act differently? I will serve everyone I encounter today, whether I like them or not – whether I trust them or not.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, give me the grace and attitude to do that today. Help me treat people as I would like to be treated. Thank you for your help in that yesterday. Please keep growing within me today.

To Quietly Serve

Scripture – John 13:1-5: It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love. The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot, son of Simon, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) What a scene! Jesus was totally and completely in control. From here on out, “Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power.” He loved these disciples of His and He was now going to show them “the full extent of his love.” While I suspect that involved far more than what would happen in this room, he began by washing their feet. That’s an act that fit within their culture. That is, it was not unknown to them. It would not have been as weird as it seems to us. What was clear and strange was Jesus doing the washing. That’s not what a teacher would do.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) What’s a parallel today? How can I follow that example? Maybe the example is in the attitude that no job or act is too small to do for someone else, nor am I too big to do it. I’ll look for some ways I can serve people today – especially people I know and love. Jesus didn’t say anything. He just acted. So will I.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Help me see how to follow your example, Lord. I know there are opportunities all around. Give me a loving, humble attitude to quietly serve others without drawing attention to myself. Forgive my arrogance. Thank you for serving me.

A Personal Word

Scripture – John 12:44-50: Then Jesus cried out, “When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me. I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness. “As for the person who hears my words but does not keep them, I do not judge him. For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it. There is a judge for the one who rejects me and does not accept my words; that very word which I spoke will condemn him at the last day. For I did not speak of my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it. I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) In today’s world, speaking about God has become quite acceptable – even expected in many political settings. But to speak about Christ is offensive to many people. For me, the two are interchangeable. That is, whether I say “God” or “Christ,” I’m usually referring to the same essential Being. Jesus makes it clear here that the two are one in the same. One of the things Jesus gives me is a personal way to picture and understand God. Maybe that’s why His name is so offensive in our culture. “God” is sort of a generic word many people use to refer to anything they want. “Jesus Christ” is personal and clearly indicates a specific faith perspective. How can I bring His name into normal conversations in a natural way?

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I am hesitant to do that. The more general the conversation the safer it is for me. I will use the name of Christ along with or in place of “God” in personal conversations this week. I will be intentional about that, and see what happens.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, please show me how to be faithful to your name in my talking. Teach me to speak with authenticity and sensitivity as I bring you into natural conversations. Give me wisdom and boldness as needed in that. Thanks!

Looking for Praise

Scripture – John 12:37-43: Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe in him. This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: “Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere: “He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn—and I would heal them.” Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory and spoke about him. Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved praise from men more than praise from God.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) I find it interesting that John stops his narrative, and adds some editorial observations here. Some still “would not believe in him.” They made the decision to believe in something else. Others did decide to believe, yet they were afraid to make that known. Then John highlights a tension that’s part of our human condition: “They loved praise from people more than praise from God.” That is certainly a tension with which I am familiar. There are people in my life I want to please. Their “praise” is very important to me. Sometimes my desire for that leads me outside the bounds of discipleship. I find myself compromising on what I really believe God wants for me in a particular situation.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will monitor myself over these next few days and note when that temptation comes. Honestly, however, I can’t say I’ll resist it. At least, not yet.

Prayer (Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, please forgive me for my weakness. Give me eyes to see. Help me recognize the points at which I’m tempted to compromise in my life. Strengthen me to resist that. Help me desire your praise above all else. That is, help me live in a way that makes you proud.

Being Open to Jesus

Scripture – John 12:30-36: Jesus said, “This voice was for your benefit, not mine. Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself.” He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die. The crowd spoke up, “We have heard from the Law that the Christ will remain forever, so how can you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this ‘Son of Man’?” Then Jesus told them, “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going. Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light.” When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) There is something in Jesus that draws “all people” to Him. I don’t have to tell people that. I don’t have to make Him attractive. I just have to lift Him up and help people see Him. Sometimes I find it hard to separate Him from the church – to simply present Him to people without bringing all the church stuff into play. The question constantly runs through my mind these days: how can I help people come close enough to Christ so they can discover for themselves who He is?

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I’ll do the best I can to stay out of the way today – and to keep the church from getting in the way. As to the baggage other people may bring to the conversation, I’ll be sensitive to that. And as I can, I’ll help them unpack some of that. For I truly believe Jesus is the best way for us all. I’d like to see everyone give Him a fair hearing.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, please give me a humble, sensitive spirit today. Help me, when the opportunity is there, to represent and present you well. Remind me, you’re the one who does the drawing.

The Hour Has Come!

Scripture – John 12:23-29: Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me. “Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name!” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and will glorify it again.” The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to him.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) The hour has come! There’s a finality to that statement. It seems like this is where Jesus reached the point of no return in His heart. This is why He came. This is the path He will follow. When I say I’ll do something, the consequences of that decision begin to take shape. Sometimes I’ll change my mind. I’ll decide the cost is too much. Or God will let me know it’s not His way I’ve chosen. In any decision, though, I come to a point of finality – when in my heart I commit myself to a course of action. Accepting whatever consequences I can see and imagine, I move forward with a commitment to follow through. Jesus said, “Now my heart is troubled.” If He could feel that way, it’s certainly no sign of weakness for me to feel uneasy. The key is, will I keep moving forward?

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will keep growing today. There are parts of me that must die in order to be transformed. They’re a little too personal to describe here. But I know what they are.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, give me courage today to keep living after your example. Lift me above the fear of growth and change. Teach me to trust you on an even deeper level.

An Invitation – If you’re interested in a face to face discussion about what we’ve been discovering in the Mini-Journal, a small group will be meeting this Sunday morning, 9:45 – 10:30am, at the Southgate Fun and Fitness Center (on Northline near I-75). To See Jesus

Scripture – John 12:17-22: Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. Many people, because they had heard that he had given this miraculous sign, went out to meet him. So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!” Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the Feast. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) People who saw what Jesus did with Lazarus kept talking about it. This raised enough curiosity that more and more people went to see Him for themselves. Once again, that’s the goal of our witness – to share what I know of Jesus. Sometimes it’s a story of what I’ve seen Him do in someone else’s life. It’s an ever more powerful story if I tell what He’s done in my life. Over all, though, the goal is to bring people to Jesus themselves – to let them discover who He is.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) A lot of people have so much “stuff” to work through before they can really see Jesus. Some of it’s church-related stuff. Much of it is life stuff. I can’t control what’s gone on in people’s lives. I will look for the church stuff that blocks their view of Christ. I will help them roll those stones to the side and come closer to Him. And I will be aware of things I do that might get in their way.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, you came for the world. Help me lead people to you. Sometimes we have to wind our way through a cluttered maze. But in the end, you are the goal for us all. Remind me of that. Use me today to unblock some paths.

Living the Story

Scripture – John 12:12-16: The next day the great crowd that had come for the Feast heard that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went out to meet him, shouting, “Hosanna!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Blessed is the King of Israel!” Jesus found a young donkey and sat upon it, as it is written, “Do not be afraid, O Daughter of Zion; see, your king is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.” At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that they had done these things to him.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) This story – this scene – is so familiar to me, I wonder, how could the disciples not understand? Jesus could not make a clearer statement that He was the Christ. Again, that’s the great advantage we have over them. We know the story. Even as I go through this gospel of John so slowly – lingering over every few verses – I know the story. They were living the story. They did not know what would happen next. At the same time, I’m living my own story today. I don’t know what will happen next. I trust in the final, final end, Christ will prevail. In the meantime, like the disciples, I simply follow – whether I understand or not. For He is the way. And that’s enough to know.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will keep my vision lifted up today. I will follow Jesus’ lead, wherever it may take me.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, give me strength and faith today. When I don’t understand what you’re doing, help me continue on the journey with you. You are the answer, even if I don’t know all the answers. Thank you for your grace and patience.

A Living Example

Scripture – John 12:9-11: Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews found out that Jesus was there and came, not only because of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. So the chief priests made plans to kill Lazarus as well, for on account of him many of the Jews were going over to Jesus and putting their faith in him.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) What was life like for Lazarus? In his sickness, I imagine he accepted his death. Then he was given a second chance to experience life. As people came to see him, what did he tell them? Did he have to tell them anything? He was a living example of the power of Christ to transform lives. While not nearly as dramatic, I’m an example of that, too. How evident is that? As I look back over the years, He has done some amazing things in me. Even in the past year changes have come. The essence of my story is what Jesus has done for me. I don’t talk about that very much, even though that’s what I know best.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will incorporate that personal story into my conversations a bit more. I will be intentional about pointing out what Christ has done in my life.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, thank you for your transforming work in my life and heart. Show me how to tell my story in ways that are natural and not annoying. Remind me, as well, that Lazarus’ life was in danger because of what Christ did for him. Please give me wisdom and courage this day as I talk with people.

Pertinent Questions

Scripture – John 12:4-8: But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.” He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it. “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) Judas asks a pertinent question. Whatever his motives might have been, the question still stands before us – especially in this day and age. In the church, how do we decide what we’ll spend money on? What’s the best use of what God has entrusted to us? As an individual within the church, I face the same questions. Without a doubt, Mary brought an extravagant gift and poured it out on Jesus’ feet. On the one hand, it does seem like a waste. At the same time, Jesus honored the gift and the giver because it came from a pure heart to honor Him. How do I honor Christ in my giving?

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) What do I have to offer Christ? Obviously, I have money, which I give (usually) with a cheerful heart. What “perfume” do I have? How can I use it to honor Him? I will address these questions. I will find something new – something personal – to give.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, open my heart as I look into myself. Help me see what you have entrusted to my care. Give me a pure heart to loosen my grip on the things I call “mine.” Show me what I have to give. Even as I look inside, keep me looking, as well, beyond myself. Please be honored in my giving. For everything I have comes from you.

Two Sisters

Scripture – John 12:1-3: Six days before the Passover, Jesus arrived at Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) Martha and Mary are two interesting New Testament characters. They represent a couple different aspects of the church. Here, Martha is serving the dinner. She seems to be the practical one. She might teach a course in Applied Theology. Mary, on the other hand, has a different role. She’s honoring Jesus – even worshipping Him with this expensive gift and act. She might teach a course on Spiritual Formation. The church needs both. I need both. If my inner, spiritual devotion leads to no outward, practical service, I’m like a fruitless tree. Likewise, if I only spend my time doing good works without taking time for spiritual nourishment and direction, I’ll lose sight of why I’m doing anything at all. I’ll easily start serving my own need to be needed and/or I’ll burn out and quit.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will nurture both aspects of my life. Specifically, I’ll work on the service side of things. I’ll look for a simple, practical way to serve Christ during the week.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, please help me learn from Martha. I’ve gained a lot from Mary. Begin moving me into new areas of service on your behalf. Show me your way. Thanks.

Ephraim Time

Scripture – John 11:54-57: Therefore Jesus no longer moved about publicly among the Jews. Instead he withdrew to a region near the desert, to a village called Ephraim, where he stayed with his disciples. When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, many went up from the country to Jerusalem for their ceremonial cleansing before the Passover. They kept looking for Jesus, and as they stood in the temple area they asked one another, “What do you think? Isn’t he coming to the Feast at all?” But the chief priests and Pharisees had given orders that if anyone found out where Jesus was, he should report it so that they might arrest him.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) So Jesus went back under cover. I wonder what He did in Ephraim. It’s hard telling how long He and His disciples were there. I imagine a lot of quiet time. Jesus certainly would have spent time in prayer – partly in preparation for His next trip to Jerusalem. I wonder what He talked about with His disciples. How did He affect the people in the village? I used to take a regular day of retreat each month. It was great to withdraw – to get away from phones and people. It really helped me focus on hearing the voice of Christ and listening for His specific word for my life. I get so busy these days, it’s hard to take a whole day. Sometimes, though, I could take five minutes.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I’m not sure where I picked up the idea that my time is more valuable than that of Jesus. His example is one of consistently withdrawing – taking time away. I will practice doing more of that. I usually have some quiet time to myself each morning. I’ll add an intentional five minute retreat each afternoon.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Thank you for your on-going presence in my life, Lord. Please keep speaking. And help me take time to hear. You are the greatest. Thanks again.

Looking for the Light

Scripture – John 11:49-53: Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, “You know nothing at all! You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.” He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one. So from that day on they plotted to take his life.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) Caiaphas unwittingly described the reason Jesus came. One person died so all people do not have to perish. God uses people all the time, whether they know it or not. In the Old Testament, God often used foreign powers to punish and/or bless Israel. Here Caiaphas thinks he’s acting against Jesus, when he’s really taking a hand in God’s great plan of salvation. God is constantly working for good in this world – even in the darkest of days. It’s my job to keep my eyes open to see that. Sometimes things look so bleak, I wonder where God is, when all the time He’s right there. I can focus on the darkness or look for the light. And sometimes I even am that light.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will be aware of God’s presence and possibilities today. Whatever happens, I know He will be there.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Thank you for the constancy of your presence in my life and in this world, Lord. Remind me often of that. Please keep my eyes open and my light shining.

Higher Expectations

Scripture – John 11:45-48: Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, put their faith in him. But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. Then the chief priests and the Pharisees called a meeting of the Sanhedrin. “What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many miraculous signs. If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) It’s amazing to me that some of the people saw what Jesus did with Lazarus and still refused to put their faith in Him. There was no debate in the Sanhedrin about what Jesus was doing. They all knew He was “performing many miraculous signs.” Their concern was with the political fallout from that and how that would affect them. Jesus never showed any concern about that. He did what He came to do. He cared for people as they had needs. He never let concerns about how things might look be an issue for Him.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) Sometimes that very concern is an issue for me. I’m aware of what I think people may think. I do some things because I think they’re what people expect me to do, and I’m afraid to step out of those boundaries. I tend, sometimes, to take my direction from perceived expectations of people rather than from Christ. I will pay attention to what I do today. I will monitor my motives. I will listen for Christ’s direction.

Prayer (Write out a brief prayer.) Please keep speaking to me, Lord. Keep the eyes and ears of my heart open to you. I’m sorry for losing sight of your call in my life. Give me courage to live as you direct today.

But, Lord...

Scripture – John 11:39-44: “Take away the stone,” he said. “But, Lord,” said Martha, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.” Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me.” When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. Jesus said to them, “Take off the grave clothes and let him go.”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) What a powerful scene this is! Jesus is about to do something beyond their deepest hopes. The people have to respond first – “Take away the stone.” Martha’s response is more typical than I’d care to admit – “But, Lord…” There are some areas in me where I keep God shut out. I have many carefully placed stones blocking the way. At the same time, I pray for Him to work with me there – to do His transforming work. I pray, “Lord, please change this.” or “Transform this attitude.” His response comes crystal clear: “Okay, I will. Take away the stone.” My response often begins, “But, Lord…” I already have an excuse for not doing what He wants before I even ask what He wants, because when it comes down to it, I usually know what He wants.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will take a chance today. In spite of Martha’s hesitation, the stone was taken away, and something wonderful happened. I will lean into my fear and remove another stone in my heart.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, help me identify these stones, and give me the courage and power to remove one of them. Help me grow closer to the person you created me to be. Thank you for your continuing patience and grace in my life.

New Possibilities

Scripture – John 11:33-39: When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. “Where have you laid him?” he asked. “Come and see, Lord,” they replied. Jesus wept. Then the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?” Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. “Take away the stone,” he said.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) Very seldom do we get glimpses of Jesus’ personal thoughts and feelings. Here we see Him “deeply moved in spirit and troubled.” He knows what He’s going to do. At the same time, He sees the pain and grief of Mary and the others. It brought tears to His own eyes. In Christ God really does identify with me. He’s not some distant, omnipotent, dispassionate power watching life unfold here. He knows grief. He knows how hard it is to watch people in pain. He knows me. And in Him, I know nothing is ever final. “Take away the stone,” Jesus said. Something new is about to happen. New possibilities are always present.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I seldom can see specifically what Christ has in mind for my future. I do live with the assurance He is always in control. I do know He has nothing but the best in mind for me. So I will walk with Him, even through some dark valleys, because I know He is with me.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, take over today. Show me your way. Give me what I need. Help me see what stones I may have put in the way myself. Show me how to take them away. Thank you.

A Difficult Day

Scripture – John 11:28-32: And after she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there. When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) Rather than the usual way I do this, I’m not going to comment directly on this passage. For the observations I wrote down are just a rehash of what John has recorded. The problem is I let this day get away from me. I usually sit down and do my Mini-Journal reflecting first thing in the day. However, today is my regular day off from usual church duties and responsibilities. Often on Mondays I sleep a little later. Then I read the paper, get everyone else off to work and school and catch some headlines on TV. Then I sit down to do my devotional reading and recording. Today a lot of miscellaneous things happened that took my time and attention. I won’t go into those details. It’s enough to say it was later in the afternoon when I sat down with the Mini-Journal. By then, my mind was racing with so many different things, I had a very hard time paying attention to anything I was reading. It was much like the story Jesus told in Luke 8 about a farmer sowing seed. By this time of day the ground of my life is so full of weeds and thorns, the seed doesn’t have much chance. What I do know is this day has been filled with challenges and frustrations. They would have been there anyway. But I made it all much harder because I didn’t have good soil ready to receive the seed of God’s word first thing.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) Every day, I will do my devotional reading and writing before I read the paper and turn on the TV. I will prepare myself as best I can to let the word sink in and take root before I get too far into the day.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, thank you for this lesson. Thank you for your patience and grace. Thank you for your living word and its power in my life.

Life Goes On

Scripture – John 11:21-27: “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.” Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” Martha answered, “I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.” Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” “Yes, Lord,” she told him, “I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world.”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) This is one powerful reality. This is our hope. Jesus came to teach us and show us death is not the end of life. As long as I keep that faith perspective, everything I experience in this life is affected by it. No matter what happens, life goes on! In Christ, all live. Jesus asked Martha a powerful question: “Do you believe this?” I have been part of many funeral services. Knowing how the person who died answered that question makes all the difference. When it comes down to it, Jesus doesn’t ask for much from us. All we have to do is believe. Maybe that’s too easy.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will live today in the light of Christ’s resurrection. I will not allow any clouds to cover that light. Lately, there have been some personal things trying to move in and do just that. I will look above them.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, today I live with hope because my answer to your question is “Yes!” Thank for saving me. Continue, please, to lift me above the concerns of this world that try to capture my heart’s attention. Help me keep my eyes lifted to you.

Even Now!

Scripture – John 11:17-22: On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem, and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home. “Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) Four days is a long time. Lazarus was clearly dead and in a tomb. Martha greets Jesus with a statement she believes to be true. There are a lot “if” situations in my life. I sometimes think “if I had done this instead of that, that would not have happened.” The fact is, I don’t know what would have happened. As Aslan once counseled Lucy, I can never know what would have happened. I can only find out what will happen as I act on decisions I make. So Martha’s first statement is followed up with a greater statement of faith and hope – “even now....God will give you whatever you ask.” Even now – four days after Lazarus’ death – hope is alive.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) Sometimes I give up. I resign myself to the fact that it’s too late to do something or correct something. I will remember, even now God is ready and able to act. He may not do exactly what I want. He is, however, always able. Hope is never lost.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Thank you, Lord, for Easter. Thank you for on-going hope. In you I am never without positive options.

Thomas' Example

Scripture – John 11:12-16: His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant natural sleep. So then he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead, and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” Then Thomas (called Didymus) said to the rest of the disciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) Over the years, Thomas has been known as “the Doubter.” We’ll see why that came to be later in John’s gospel. Thomas, it seems to me, was a realist. Faith was hard for him. At the same time, his commitment to Jesus was deep. That depth is seen in his statement here. He knew people in power were looking for Jesus in order to kill Him. Thomas fully expected that would be the end result of this trip back to Judea. Given that, he’s ready to follow anyway. His call to the other disciples still comes to us, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” Doubts or not, Thomas put his life on the line for Christ.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) What does “dying for Christ” mean in this day and age – in this culture in which I live? When it comes down to it, what do I sacrifice at all? I will let those questions disturb me today.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, strengthen my commitment to you. You know I love you. You know I can say I will give up my life for you. And you know who I am at the deepest level of my life. Please continue to work with me there.

An Invitation – If you’re interested in a face to face discussion about what we’ve been discovering in the Mini-Journal, join us at Bethel Baptist (Trenton & Venness in Southgate) this Sunday morning, 9:45 – 10:30am.

God's Timing

Scripture – John 11:7-11: Then he said to his disciples, “Let us go back to Judea.” “But Rabbi,” they said, “a short while ago the Jews tried to stone you, and yet you are going back there?” Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? A man who walks by day will not stumble, for he sees by this world’s light. It is when he walks by night that he stumbles, for he has no light.” After he had said this, he went on to tell them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.”

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) Who of us understands God’s timing? I only know if I pay attention, He will let me know when to move. Many times I have responded at the right time. For example, I’ll drop by to see someone and it turns out to be the perfect time. It’s nothing the two of us planned. It’s a matter of the Holy Spirit working through that underground communication network He uses. Other times I have not responded to God’s immediate call to act, and it turned out that an opportunity was missed. Jesus, of course, had the great advantage of being God. So He knew exactly what He was doing. His disciples, however, could only follow His lead, even if they didn’t understand what He was doing. In that we share a common bond with them.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will keep consciously tuned into the Spirit’s nudging today. I have several phone calls I’ve been putting off. I’ll make them today.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, please increase my spiritual sensitivity today. I want to follow your lead. Empower me to do that – to look beyond myself and my agenda. Thanks.

No Hurry

Scripture – John 11:1-6: Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. This Mary, whose brother Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair. So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one you love is sick.” When he heard this, Jesus said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.” Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. Yet when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) This is the beginning of an amazing story. It’s going to be hard to move through it slowly day by day. I forget most of the time that Jesus had friends. He wasn’t always in the spotlight being “the Messiah.” There was the relatively small group of disciples that moved around with Him. I’ve never really thought about the conversations they must have had. I mean, they spent a lot of time walking from place to place. Here they just seem to be hanging out together. What do friends talk about? Anything and everything! Then word comes that another friend is sick. Yet rather than leave, He intentionally waits a couple more days. His ways truly are not our ways.

Application (Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will move slowly today. Jesus never hurried from one place to another. So, I will not rush either. I will be peaceful and calm. I trust everything I need to do today will be done. The other things I want to do are not all that important.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Slow me down, Lord, on the inside. Help me live each moment, see each person, complete each task. Thank you for your peace, your example and your friendship.

Spiritual Simplicity

Scripture – John 10:37-42: Do not believe me unless I do what my Father does. But if I do it, even though you do not believe me, believe the miracles, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.” Again they tried to seize him, but he escaped their grasp. Then Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing in the early days. Here he stayed and many people came to him. They said, “Though John never performed a miraculous sign, all that John said about this man was true.” And in that place many believed in Jesus.

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) Even though I serve as one of the so-called religious leaders of my day, I’ve always found myself more comfortable with the people “across the Jordan.” It continues to strike me that people without formal education and/or theological training have a much easier time believing in Jesus. Maybe they have less to unlearn. Or maybe they haven’t intellectualized their faith. That is, they have room for simple belief without having to explain everything. I don’t know how my car works, but I use it most every day. Likewise, I don’t know how my faith works, but I live in it every day. The fact is, my whole life is better because of that – because of Him. I don’t have to understand how that happens to enjoy it as a gift.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will live in simple faith. At the same time, I will continue to read and think and grow intellectually. God gave me a brain to use. He gives me faith to live.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, whatever happens today, I will continue to trust you. Please keep me open to new ideas and concepts. Help me listen to the perspectives of other people. Yet, in all of that, let me never substitute knowledge for faith. Thank you.

A Meeting of Meanings

Scripture – John 10:31-36: Again the Jews picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus said to them, “I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?” “We are not stoning you for any of these,” replied the Jews, “but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.” Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I have said you are gods’? If he called them ‘gods,’ to whom the word of God came—and the Scripture cannot be broken—what about the one whom the Father set apart as his very own and sent into the world? Why then do you accuse me of blasphemy because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’?

Observation(Write down what you see in the scripture.) These Jewish leaders were having a bad day. They didn’t understand who Jesus was. They didn’t know how to respond to what He was saying. The best they could come up with was to throw stones at Him. I find it far easier to dismiss someone rather than enter into dialogue with them. Dialogue calls for careful listening. It leads to a meeting of meanings. It’s not that we necessarily agree with one another. We do, however, understand what we’re each saying. It takes work and intention to get to that point. It’s far easier to dismiss someone as an enemy than to listen to what they’re saying.

Application(Write how you will be different today because of what you have just read.) I will listen more carefully to people. I will seek dialogue on controversial issues and in daily interactions.

Prayer(Write out a brief prayer.) Lord, thank you for the assurance that you always understand what I mean – sometimes more clearly than I do. Help me listen and let be. Show me how to talk with people rather than to them.
